(Wood fired Shuiping Teapot)

This studio crafted these pots from pure Yixing clay, without any additives. Their pots are half-handmade.

This pot uses Dicaoqing clay from the Huang Long Shan area. This clay is quite versatile; for that reason, it pairs well with many different teas. The appearance of the clay is not as coarse as Tian Qing Ni or Jiang Poni, but it’s very oily and contains less sand.

This clay has been aged for nine years. They fired the pot at 1200 °C in the wood kiln.

While the pots from this studio are not entirely perfect, their craftsmanship is exquisite. When compared with older teapots from Factory One or earlier periods, the craftsmanship of this studio’s modern pieces shows remarkable improvement, particularly in the precision of the lid seal and the smoothness of the pour.

The wood-firing process is long and complex, combining both electric and wood kilns. The teapot is first fired in an electric kiln, then wood-fired, and finally finished again in the electric kiln. The whole process spans several days, with the wood-firing stage lasting around three days.

The shape of this pot is very versatile. However, since the pot is relatively small, you may need to find a workaround to accommodate large tea leaves, as with some gushu Sheng puer tea.

For the most part, the lids on this studio’s pots fit tightly and seal well, though a slight drip may occur if you tilt the pot too quickly to a vertical position with certain shapes.

What teas pair with this clay?

We’ve tested this pot with Wulongs and various kinds of Sheng Puer (and also Shu Puer), and both the shape and clay perform beautifully across different teas. That said, I recommend experimenting with different teas to find which ones pair best with the clay. In the end, it’s the tea that decides which teapot suits it best. So enjoy the process of finding the perfect match according to your palate.

However, wood-fired Yixing teapots have a slightly more muting effect on tea than electric kiln ones. So please bear this in mind when choosing a wood-fired pot.

Opening the teapot (before first usage)

Since these teapots are brand new, they may have some powder inside (this is quartz sand used during firing to prevent the lid from sticking to the body). There may also be traces of clay residue. Rinse the pot with boiling water 2 or 3 times, or until the water runs clean.
